Izumisano Furusato Machiya-kan Museum

Here you can catch a glimpse of what life was like in the middle of the Edo period (the late 18th century), which is when the merchant class developed a distinctive culture, by seeing a repaired and preserved machiya (Japanese traditional-style townhouse).

The “Furosato Machiya-kan Museum (formerly Niigawa Family House)” was originally built in the middle of the Edo period to run a soy sauce business, and it is now a precious cultural property that gives us an idea of the architectural style of the times in the Sennan area. The repaired and preserved building is open to the public as a municipal cultural property.

A stroll through Sano Machiba

Take a relaxing stroll through Sano Machiba, which features a mix of modern cityscapes and old historical streets.

The area surrounding Izumisano Furusato Machiya-kan Museum is referred to as “Sano Machiba,” and it led to the flourishing of the distinctive culture developed by the merchant class in the Edo period. Even now the streets of the town remain as they were originally created with old storehouses and machiya, so the area feels like walking through a maze. The skyscrapers that can be glimpsed from the alleyways are another distinctive feature of “Sano Machiba.”
